That might call for some explanation. Although Calvados of course belongs in Normandy, there are a few houses in the Cognac region that have permission to store and age Calvados in their cellars. That is precisely where the story of this special selection began.

Through Géraldine Landier and her husband Alexandre Vingtier we tracked down this unique cask. Alexandre is an internationally renowned French spirits expert, consultant, author and journalist. As co-founder of Rumporter and a true all‑round spirits professional, he has built an exceptional network. But just as important: he was born and raised in Normandy. His personal bond with the region opens doors to small producers and family stories that often remain hidden otherwise.

This Calvados comes from such a story: a family legacy from a historically rich family from Sainte-Foy-de-Montgommery.

The result is a Calvados Pays d’Auge (100% apple) vintage 2001, distilled in a wood‑fired alembic and bottled at natural cask strength of 45.7%. Only 162 bottles were filled on 06/12/2024, and stored in our warehouse until the moment was ripe to share them. The indication “M.E.B.” means “Mis en bouteille” — bottled by Rémi Landier SARL. Thanks to Alexandre and Géraldine for the trust, the collaboration and for sharing this small but beautiful piece of Norman history.

About the producer:
From an artisanal producer in Sainte-Foy-De-Montgommery, and the place name also reveals the exact origin ;-)

Tasting notes:
Nose: A very expressive and lively nose, immediately recognisable as old cider and bruised apples, apple compote. Beneath that, a more mature, lightly oxidative layer emerges: walnut, almond, gentle wood spices and worked leather. The high volatile components give the nose lots of lift: a fine, almost nervous tension with hints of varnish, floor wax and very light apple vinegar. Roundly polished, characterful, energetic and authentic.

Palate: The attack is powerful and intense. First comes ripe yellow apple, then more cider apple, dried fruit and a lightly spicy warmth. The alcohol is clearly present but mainly provides structure and breadth. In the mid-palate it becomes more robust and gastronomic: old cider, baked apple, cinnamon‑like wood spices, a hint of walnuts, some caramel without sweetness. The higher acids provide freshness and tension, preventing the Calvados from becoming heavy or sticky. This is not a sweet dessert Calvados, but a beautiful Pays d’Auge with fermentative character and a nicely balanced soul.

Finish: The finish is lively and characterful, with a fine balance between fruit, acidity, spiciness and rustic elegance. A Calvados that intrigues — powerful, honest and full of personality.

Label explanation:
This label is inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, one of the most iconic depictions of Norman history. The figure of “Le Seigneur” – the lord of the land – refers to a special kind of lord: powerful, watchful and deeply connected to his region. That fits perfectly with this Calvados from Pays d’Auge, the historical heart of Normandy’s cider and calvados culture. And it fits perfectly with Alexandre Vingtier, rooted in and still connected with Normandy."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0599/8408/5184/files/Malternative-Belgium-Calvados-5-Le-Seigneur-2001-70.jpg?v=1789138333
