Malternative Belgium Cognac Les Bons Vivants #2 (Lot 73)

This cognac was made by André Bertandeau made from Ugni Blanc grapes in Petite Champagne (Cognac), France.

Aged for 48 years in French oak casks, it was bottled in 2023 (02/2023) by Malternative Belgium at cask strength 53.6% . The cask was selected along with Bert Bruyneel by Asta Morris from the cellars of the respected negotiant Cognac Grosperrin. An Alambic Charentais (Pot Still) was used for the distillation.

At André Bertandeau is the same producer as the legendary André Lot 73 , which was bottled by Jean and Amy Pasquet a few years ago. Full recommendation! ;)

Pieter from Malternative Belgium writes about this cognac: "In June 2021, Ysatis and I visited the fantastic wine cellars of Grosperrin in Saintes. These cellars hold casks from various small family cognac makers, selected over a period of 20 years. Unique Cognacs that would otherwise probably disappear into the blends of any of the four big houses.Guilhem Grosperrin kindly showed us the way through this cellar at the tasting.Of course there were a few casks that caught our attention, because we at Malternative Belgium are not into them Looking forward to bottling something that has had a few versions released already, we then bought 2 casks, the '84 (2022 release) and this '73.

This barrel was owned by André Bertandeau. During the Second World War (1942) André was deported to Germany for 2 years to do forced labor and was liberated by the Russians. He was held in high esteem in the region. Not only as a winemaker in Salignac-sur-Charente, but also as a supporter of families who lost loved ones during the war. Throughout his professional career, he has donated his winnings to charity. When Andre passed away in December 2016, his vineyards and stock were auctioned off. The proceeds from this were donated to various charities such as Doctors Without Borders.

Aside from the compelling story behind this cask, this is simply a top-notch Petite Champagne. An absolutely distinctive, balanced and straightforward cognac. What you smell you get in taste and finish, no madness. Lots of ripe peach, fruit blossom and mango. The wood is present, in a good sense, because there is a lot of minty freshness. But also the storage of old books (rancio), black tea and cinnamon sticks. Congratulations, you can blow out the 50 candles!

This keg was shared with Bert Bruyneel of Asta Morris with a result of 492 bottles. 246 bottles each, evenly distributed, as André would have liked. "
