Dieses Set vereint zwei Spirituosen mit gemeinsamer Geschichte: einen Dunville’s Irish Whiskey (70 cl) und den Armagnac, der ihn geprägt hat, als 10-cl-Sample (L’Encantada Grand Môle 1985 #17).

Der Whiskey wurde 2003 in Irland zweifach destilliert, reifte 21 Jahre und wurde fürs Finish in ein 1985er Grand-Môle-Armagnacfass (#17) von The Distillates gefüllt. Abgefüllt wurde 2024 von der Echlinville Distillery — nur ⅓ des Fasses — in Fassstärke mit 54,29%.

Der beiliegende Armagnac wurde 1985 von der heute geschlossenen Domaine Grand Môle aus Colombard & Ugni Blanc in der Ténarèze gebrannt (Alambic Armagnacais), reifte 37 Jahre und liegt bei 62,60% Fassstärke.

This release is part of a larger whiskey journey collaboration between The Distillates (me), L’Encantada, and Echlinville distillery. We are releasing an elegant Dunville’s 21 Year double distilled Irish Whiskey finished in my very own 1985 Grand Môle armagnac cask. It is a beautiful spirit, and nothing is cooler than sipping world class whiskey, while having the armagnac that nurtured it in a separate, accompanying copita.

As a passionate geek, I often seek the DNA of a bottling. Whiskey is profoundly shaped by the wood in which it is nurtured, and for those in the know, stating it was aged in a “rum”, “sherry” or “brandy” cask is as vague as telling a sommelier you want french wine .. you know… like from grapes. Of the few rare Armagnac cask finishes I find, they never share the name of the domaine. Not surprising as Armagnac producers rarely sell good casks — they are used for generations. However, as an indie bottler who owns a number of armagnac casks, and with the help of cellar master Vincent Cornu at L’Encantada, we made magic happen.

The Whiskey: Dunville’s 21 Year Irish Whiskey. Born in 1808 and reborn in 2012, the Dunville’s Irish Whiskey story is one of fame, fortune, tragedy and revival. Among whisky geeks today, it’s considered some of Ireland’s very best whiskeys, with a potent palate and rich heritage. My Grand Môle cask was filled with a fruity and nuanced double distilled Irish whiskey from 2003. I asked if it’s legal in Ireland to only bottle part of a cask, as they often do in France. Turns out it is. Echlinville bottled ⅓ of the cask, and we are now finally able to bring it to market.

The Armagnac: L’Encantada Domaine Grand Môle 1985 #17. This Armagnac was produced in 1985 by the now closed Domaine Grand Môle from Colombard and Ugni Blanc grapes in Armagnac Ténarèze, France. It matured for 37 years in cask 17 and was moved at cask strength (62.60%) in 2023 to Dame Jeanne (large 50-liter glass demijohns). An Alambic Armagnacais (mini column still) was used for distillation. Vincent, maitre de chai of L’Encantada, slipped me a 10CL sample while at Belfast Whiskey Week in 2021. A cask from 1985 of Grand Môle had been misplaced at the bottom of a stack and evaporated to the point where it became deeply concentrated, far outside the normal profile. This is not yo’ mama’s Grand Môle — a huge, deep, dark tropical Agricole fruit bomb. An old world whiskey drinker’s armagnac."
